SimpleAir is seeking $125M in damages from Google after a jury found that push notification services in Android infringe on a SimpleAir patent, the company said Tuesday.

Google infringed SimpleAir’s patent with its Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) and Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) services, SimpleAir said in a news release. These services are used by Google to process and send instant notifications for Android applications, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail, it added.

The jury found all five claims of SimpleAir’s 7,035,914 patent on a “system and method for transmission of data” valid and infringed by Google, according to the jury verdict that was filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, on Saturday.

The Android ecosystem and wearable technology will probably get a boost from the patent deal Google and Samsung have struck, but the agreement is unlikely to have an influence on Samsung’s intellectual property disputes with Apple, analysts said Monday.

Google and Samsung announced Sunday that they had reached a global cross-license deal for existing and future patents for the next 10 years. The companies said they want to reduce the potential for litigation and instead focus on innovation. The deal also paves the way for a deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future technologies, they said.

BlackBerry’s mobile messaging service BBM will be available for Windows Phone and Nokia X users this summer, the company announced Monday during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Nokia X and Windows Phone users will be able to make free voice calls over Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection between BBM contacts on Windows Phone, Nokia X, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry phones, the company said. They will also be able to chat one-on-one or in groups with up to 50 people and can share photos, documents and voice notes, among other things.

Adobe's Revel photo-editing app comes to Android

Adobe has made its Revel photo-app available for Android, allowing users to share and edit photos on their Android devices.

Revel is an app meant for sharing, storing and managing photos and videos. Users can create albums, share photos and videos via social media and edit pictures as well as add captions and comments to the photos, Adobe said in a blog post announcing Revel’s availability for Android.

Revel is also integrated with the Mac and Windows applications Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12 to allow users to upload photos to Revel’s cloud in order to access edited photos on the move. Files can also be uploaded to revel from Photoshop Express, GroupPix, VideoBite, Lightroom and iPhoto, Adobe said.

Google is facing a lawsuit over unauthorized in-app purchases on Android devices by children.

The class action suit is brought on behalf of all persons in the U.S. who paid for unauthorized purchases of game currency by their minor children through the Google Play app store. It was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, one of the law firms that filed the suit said Monday.

Many games in the Google Play store are offered free but are designed to induce in-app purchases of virtual supplies, ammunition, fruits and vegetables or cash, the class action law firms involved in the case noted in the complaint.

The European Commission has charged Google with abusing its dominant position in Internet search services in Europe by systematically favoring its own comparison shopping product, Google Shopping. It also opened an antitrust investigation into Google's Android mobile operating system.

Such conduct infringes EU antitrust rules because it stifles competition and harms consumers, the Commission said Wednesday, adding that it has formally notified Google of the charges in a so-called Statement of Objections. Google now gets a chance to defend itself before the Commission makes a final decision, which could include a fine of up to 10 percent of the company's annual turnover.
